Best Shampoo For Tape Extensions

I have worked hard on my hair a lot in the past few years. And that means keeping up with trends in the market, such as tape extensions. I first came across these when a girl in my circle introduced me to them. For a while, I had noticed that she would often change her hairstyles. And the rate at which she did so left me wondering how healthy her hair was. Well, it turns out that she could make these changes by using tape extensions, which are different from the standard extensions.

For one, you get to have long hair immediately. As much as I use growth shampoos and other such products, you know the results are not instantaneous. But with tape extensions, you see the effects immediately. So you can do away with cutting your hair and raising it by using these extensions. Secondly, they look great, which is the reason they have become so popular. However, this aesthetic value will only be in play for as long as the extensions are in good condition. If you do not take care of them, it will show, and you will not feel as photogenic as you did when you first used them.

Coming up with a care routine for extensions was new territory for me. But I combined what I learned from my friend with the information I found online to come up with a long-lasting routine. And I will share my findings with you, as well as some products you can use on your scalp. The longer you follow a routine, the better the results, and you can forego replacing the extension for a long time. Here goes:

How to choose the best shampoo for tape extensions

The shampoo you use on the tape extensions will determine how long you can use them. It is thus best to be careful when making a selection in this regard.

  • The first point to note is that the extensions are an addition to your natural hair. Thus, you must think about your hair type and its needs. Suppose you have an oily scalp, you should get a shampoo that works for your type. If you use something that does not create the right oil balance, the extension will become greasy. And this will lead to other problems down the road. So keep this in mind.
  • Secondly, the ingredients in the shampoo will always matter, extensions in place, or otherwise. The one thing you should avoid using on your scalp is sulfates. They strip you of natural oils and leave your scalp feeling dry. If you use a shampoo containing sulfates for a long time, your hair could become brittle. Sulfates cause a lot of damage, and you end up spending a lot of money and time on repairing it. So avoid them at all costs, they only work to add lather and strip your hair. Also, they reduce the pigment on color-treatments. Look for shampoos that list natural ingredients as the main components.
  • Sometimes, looking at the brand is essential as some are more reputable than others. But instead of doing that, I advocate for looking at the reviews. People are the most reliable source of information regarding products, more so in this modern age.

After you narrow down your choices based on the above qualities, you can focus on the price range that works for you.

When can I wash my tape-in extensions?

You probably have a hair care routine in place regarding your natural hair. So how does this work when you have extensions. Well, you need to treat the two as separate cases to get the best results. Washing your extensions should be as regular as you find necessary. Some people do it daily owing to their weather conditions. Others can go a week.

Note

that you should also be careful when styling the extensions such that you do not damage them. Using styling tools on the extensions more often than is necessary is a sure way to ruin their looks.

Before you wash your hair, you should comb it. I used to wash it without combing it, even without the extensions in place. I would tell myself that it would prevent breakage, but I was wrong on this. As you massage shampoo into your hair, you can tangle the strands. It gets even worse where the hair is uncombed. So if you want to avoid pain and hair loss, do not skip this step.

Next, I like to use natural oils in my hair at least half an hour before I wash it. This step helps in softening my hair and makes it easy to manage after shampooing. Note that you should not use the oil near the bonding; else, the extensions will fall out.

From here, you can proceed to wash your hair as you would when using the suitable shampoo. When doing so, avoid rubbing the bonding spots as this can loosen them. Work the shampoo onto your scalp and cover most of the hair before rinsing off the product. Shampooing alone works in cleaning the hair and scalp. However, you cannot properly care for the extensions without using a suitable conditioner. Find one that works for your hair type and use it. If you wish to style your hair using a heated tool, ensure that you use protecting spray on your hair.

Commonly Asked Questions

Can I use regular shampoo on tape in extensions?

Well, this depends on you, and the regular shampoo that you often use. However, before using a regular shampoo, you should look into the ingredients used in making it. The components may be harsh, such that they will negatively affect the extensions and your hair. That is why you should use a shampoo that works for tape extensions.

How do you take care of tape in extensions?

You must take caution when washing hair where extensions are in place. However, you should not be so careful that you end up not being thorough with the cleaning. If you are too lenient, you will pave the way for the accumulation of dirt, and this will lead to other problems.

You should wash the extensions as if they are your natural hair without rubbing on the extensions too much. The bonding areas are quite sensitive, and if you are very harsh with the rubbing, they will come loose.

For ponytail extensions, which I love, you need to have a bowl of warm water. Place them in the bowl and start applying shampoo from the tip. Note that the washing should begin after combing the hair to avoid any tangling.

Finally, rinse the shampoo off the hair and use conditioner on it. Once the extension is dry, you can work on styling it. Use this cleaning technique on flip in-hair extensions as well.

But when dealing with tape extensions, you need to be careful when massaging the shampoo around the bonding spots. Being rough will lead to the coming off of the extensions. Also, do not pull on them and ensure that you reduce the conditioner or oil used near the bonding spots.

Caring for your extensions

How do you ensure that your extensions look great all year round? Well, that is easy. It all comes down to the hair care routine you have in place.

Other than using a suitable shampoo, some other practices are of the essence:

  • For one, you should brush the extensions often to ensure that they do not tangle. Failure to do so will give you a hard time when cleaning them and can contribute to hair breakage. Find a good brush and work on your hair from the roots to the tips. The brush should be soft, and you should be patient with this process. There were times that I would be in a hurry to leave the house and would pull on my hair a lot. I later learned that this tugging was costing me a lot of strands. And I cannot afford to lose them.
  • Washing your extensions in the right way will also ensure that they last long. Start by brushing them before wetting them as you move downwards. From here, you can use a shampoo which you should rinse off with enough water. Where there are knots, you should use a wide-toothed comb on the hair. I know I have emphasized a lot on the cleaning process. However, overlooking it will cost you a lot.
  • Conditioning is of the essence as it will ensure that your hair remains healthy and hydrated. So do not skip this step. You should shampoo then follow through with conditioning. I advise you to dry your hair naturally instead of using heated styling tools. If you must use heat, use the lowest settings available as this will not interfere with the bonding.

Bottom Line

Using extensions allows you to be experimental with your hair, and it feels great. However, without proper care practices in play, the extensions can only last so long. So invest in a good shampoo and enjoy your investment for longer. All the best!
